Modernization in the Republican Clinical Oncology Dispensary allowed to increase the capacity of the PET Department

27 October 2020, Tuesday

In 2020, as a result of the modernization of the cyclotron-radiochemical complex of the Republican Clinical Oncology Dispensary, it became possible to automatically synthesize a new radiopharmaceutical 18F-fluoroethylthyrosine instead of the previously used manual synthesis of 11C-methionine.

This upgrade increased the capacity of the positron emission tomography (PET) Department from 5 patients to 20 patients per synthesis. PET-CT of the brain with 18F-fluoroethylthyrosine introduced as a result of modernization into everyday practice due to its high tumor specificity has a number of clinical advantages: the ability to determine the degree of malignancy of the tumor, more accurate determination of the boundaries and size of the tumor, assessment of the radical removal of the tumor, as well as differential diagnostics between continued tumor growth and post-radiation damage. ⁣ ⁣
