Diabetes mellitus is a dangerous chronic disease characterized by hyperglycemia (chronic increase in blood glucose levels), which develops due to insufficient insulin production or a decrease in the sensitivity of body cells to it.
This condition was first described by British physician John Langdon Down in 1866, but it was not until the middle of the 20th century that its genetic nature was finally proven.
