The Russian Ministry of Health has announced a Week for the Prevention of Infectious Diseases (in honor of World Tuberculosis Day)

The Week of Prevention of Infectious Diseases is timed to coincide with World Tuberculosis Day, which is celebrated on March 24. Tuberculosis remains one of the main infectious threats: according to WHO data for 2025, about 10 million people get sick every year, 1.5 million die. But up to 95% of cases can be prevented. This article explains why infections are dangerous, how prevention works, and what to do to protect yourself.

What are infectious diseases?

Infectious diseases are caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi or parasites transmitted by airborne droplets, through water, food or contact. Tuberculosis is a prime example: mycobacterium tuberculosis affects the lungs in 85% of cases, sometimes bones, kidneys or brain. Symptoms: prolonged cough (with blood), fever, night sweats, weight loss, fatigue.
