14 November 2014, Friday

World Diabetes Day has been introduced in 1991 by the International Diabetic Federation and World Health Organization in reply to the risk of diabetes’ increase all over the world.
In January, 1922 young Canadian scientist Frederik Banting has saved life, for the first time in history, having made an insulin injection to the 14 years old boy, suffering serious juvenile diabetes’ form. Instead to receive the patent for insulin and become rich, Banting gives all rights to Toronto University. Further the rights to insulin production have passed to Canadian Council of Medical Research and in the end of 1922 the new medicine has appeared in the market of medicines.
Discovery of Frederik Banting and his colleague Charles Besta has saved life to million people. In 1923, Nobel Prize has been given to Banting and McLeod, recognizing the first great achievement of the XX-th century in the field of biochemistry and medicine. Merits of Best have been ignored that has extremely touched Banting, and he has voluntary handed over half of Nobel Prize to Best.
Since 2007 World Diabetes Day is conducted under the UN auspices. November, 14th has been selected the date of World Diabetes Day in order to immortalize F.Banting’s merits who was born on November, 14th, 1891.

According to the data of WHO, diabetes increase population death rate in 2-3 times and reduce the lifetime. Now there are about 200 million diabetics in the world (but their real number is 2 times more), and every year their number increases.
By the way, there are simple measures on diabetes’ preventive maintenance: healthy life style and healthy food.
