On November 27 in Kazan, on the eve of World AIDS Day, representatives of government and non-government organizations working in HIV prevention discussed plans to implement a strategy to combat the spread of HIV in Tatarstan.
The round table was attended by Chairman of the Public Chamber of the Republic of Tatarstan Zilya Valeyeva, Deputy Head of the Department for Health, Sports and Healthy Lifestyle Development of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Tatarstan Raushan Zaripov, Chief Physician of the Republican Center for AIDS Prevention Niyaz Galiullin, as well as representatives of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Tatarstan and non-profit organizations on HIV prevention and control. The round table was moderated by Liliya Taisheva, Director of the Autonomous Nonprofit Center for Public Health Education.
During the discussion of the round table, state and public organizations summed up the results of work on combating HIV and AIDS in Tatarstan, and also discussed further plans of work in terms of multidisciplinary cooperation: "For the first time in the Republic of Tatarstan the incidence of HIV infection has decreased by 15%, to 17.4 cases per 100,000 people. We have gained unique experience in the Republic, and people come to us to study. This is a great merit of our non-profit organizations," said Zilya Valeyeva.
Every year on December 1, the world celebrates International AIDS Day in the framework of which governments, state, and public figures draw the population's attention to the problem of the HIV epidemic, call for compliance with preventive measures, and regular HIV testing. The central theme of World AIDS Day in 2020 was "International solidarity, shared responsibility." This theme of united and cohesive interaction in addressing specific challenges is particularly relevant this year. During the discussion, the importance of joint efforts of government agencies, outpatient clinics, and public organizations was repeatedly emphasized. "In 2020, our Center for Public Health Education worked in 6 regions of the Republic of Tatarstan with the most affected by the epidemic, with vulnerable groups, drug addicts, homeless people. We covered more than 3,900 people and provided more than 9,500 services to these groups, including taking people for monitoring. During the coronavirus infection in March-April 2020, at the request of the AIDS Center, we delivered life-saving antiretroviral therapy and traveled to 498 addresses in Tatarstan," summed up Liliya Taisheva.
