Signs of a smoker that are noticeable to the dentist

20 November 2025, Thursday

The oral cavity is the first barrier to nicotine entering the body. An experienced dentist can recognize a smoker literally at a glance.

Today, on the International Day of Smoking Cessation, Larisa Chesnokova, head of the therapeutic department of the Republican Dental Clinic, listed the main signs that indicate a smoking patient.

1. Bad breath. Despite intensive hygiene, the unpleasant odor persists due to the accumulation of bacterial deposits.

2. Dry mouth. Salivation decreases, which leads to increased accumulation of bacteria and exacerbates dental problems.

3. Changed teeth color. The surface of the teeth becomes yellowish due to the settling tar and nicotine. Nicotine penetrates so deeply that the color of teeth cannot be corrected even with a good cleaning.

4. Loss of enamel gloss. The enamel loses its natural luster and smoothness, acquiring a rough surface.

5. Pathological changes in the mucous membranes. There are inflammatory processes, redness, soreness and discomfort in the gum tissues. Paradontitis and paradontosis develop faster in smokers.

It is worth noting that patients who quit smoking begin to observe positive changes after a short time after getting rid of the bad habit. Contact your dentist in a timely manner and take good care of your health!
