What is important for the health of children’s lungs, and how can you tell if there are problems? Says Galina Shadrukhina, a pediatrician who has been working for many years in the pulmonology department of the Nizhnekamsk Children’s District Hospital with a Perinatal Center. What should you pay attention to first?
🔹 Respiratory rate. If a child is breathing faster than normal while at rest, this is a reason to be concerned.
🔹 A persistent dry cough that lasts for weeks may be a symptom of mycoplasma infection — a common cause of bronchitis and pneumonia in children, especially school‑age children.
🔹 Cyanosis. Bluish discoloration of the lips, tongue, or nails is an alarming sign that requires immediate medical attention.
What helps keep the lungs healthy? Prevention starts with simple daily habits: walking in the fresh air, humidifying the air indoors, especially during the heating season, and avoiding exposure to tobacco smoke — even secondhand smoke can seriously harm children’s lungs.
