Surgery for the prevention of the recurrence of herniated disc has been performed for the first time in Tatarstan in neurosurgery unit №1 of Republican Clinical Hospital on March, 6.
Microdiscectomy is the most common surgical treatment for herniated disc. The part of the damaged disc squeezing the nerve is removed during surgery to reduce pressure and pain.
However, discectomy does not cure the disc, it does not repair the rupture in the disc wall. In the case of a large opening (>5 mm), every fourth patient has a new hernia and the need for re-operation.
The first implant capable to close the hole after discectomy is Barricaid device. It is the result of scientific and clinical research on the anatomy, pathology and biomechanics of herniated disc conducted by many leading scientists and spinal surgeons for over 10 years.
