Psychological support is vital in rehabilitation

9 September 2020, Wednesday

On September 8, the World Physical Rehabilitation Day is celebrated. There is the Medical Rehabilitation Department at the Polyclinic #2 of the Central Municipal Multifunctional Hospital. Here residents of Nizhnekamsk are aided in recovery after strokes, heart attacks,  injuries, high-tech neurosurgical, traumatological, and orthopedic surgeries.

Fluza Akhtyamova, the head of the department, told us that rehabilitation consists of three stages.

"At each stage, a multidisciplinary team works with the patient. A neurologist, traumatologist, cardiologist, neuropsychologist-speech therapist, exercise therapy instructor, and nurses treat and rehabilitate patients as a single team.  Then the patient visits a neurologist, who, together with a general practitioner, builds an individual program specifically for this person, considering specific psychological and disability conditions. All patient's data comes to us from the in-patient facility; this is how we have developed continuity between hospitals and polyclinics. We enroll the patient in our department as a part of a regular routine. Here the patient receives treatment: all types of equipment physiotherapy, physical therapy and massage, mechanical therapy, occupational therapy, drug therapy, and other types of treatment to restore motor and speech functions. Relatives are also trained, because often after a vascular accident, the patient cannot take care of himself," said Fluza Akhtyamova.

In a year, about a thousand people recover in the department, most of them are stroke patients. Because of the coronavirus, the department did not work for almost three months. During this time, specialists worked in the hospital for patients with coronavirus infection. And now, employees are glad that they returned to their jobs – they say they missed their dear patients.
