The child was urgently arrived from the Republic of Mari El to the emergency Department of the Children’s Republican Clinical Hospital with a diagnosis of chronic purulent medial otitis in the acute stage and acute labyrinthitis.
The multidimensional character of our clinic allowed us to promptly conduct a in-depth examination of a child in all directions, which revealed significant destruction of the temporal bone.
- The complexity of this observation is due to the complex anatomical structure of the temporal bone and the aggressiveness of the pathological process. In my practice, this is only the 2nd case, - commented otorhinolaryngologist Irina Andreeva.
The operation lasted 3.5 hours. The physicians managed to perform a radical sanify operation on the right ear.
- With such destruction of the temporal bone, without emergency surgery, there is a threat not only of permanent hearing loss, but also of intracranial complications, - explains Irina Gennadievna.
The labyrinthitis is a rather rare complication in pediatric otorhinolaryngology. It is accompanied by dizziness, nausea and vomiting, loss of balance, unsteady gait, nystagmus (movement of the eyeballs), headache and a sharp decrease in hearing. The most common cause of labyrinthitis is chronic inflammation of the middle ear, when pus and cholesteatoma, which has aggressive properties, destroys the densest and most compact bone in our body.
At the moment, the child is being monitored by physicians of the ENT Department of the Children’s Republican Clinical Hospital, and feels well. Headaches and dizziness were completely stopped.
