Today is International Smoking Cessation Day

20 November 2025, Thursday

When people start smoking, they hardly think about the health problems that cigarettes, hookahs and vapes lead to. On the International Day of Smoking Cessation, Tatarstan oncologists and narcologists once again remind you why this habit harms your health.

1. Smoking causes 16 types of cancer

The lips, tongue, larynx, esophagus, gastrointestinal tract, and lungs are at risk. Tumors can also occur where the smoke does not penetrate. People who smoke have cancers of the kidneys, colon, and other organs unrelated to breathing.

2. Smoking seriously harms the heart

Cigarettes, both classical and electronic, cause diseases of the cardiovascular system, most often chronic coronary heart disease and arterial hypertension.

3. Smoking destroys lung tissue

Smokers' lungs are prone to frequent inflammatory processes. The hot smoke that enters the lungs changes the structure of the mucous membrane and damages it. Smoking destroys lung tissue so much that one day a person will not be able to breathe on his own.

4. Smoking worsens digestion

The smoker's gastric mucosa is disrupted, which can provoke the appearance of malignant tumors. Tobacco smoke releases carcinogens that have an irritating effect on the gastrointestinal tract.

5. Smoking increases anxiety.

Smoking affects human behavior, it harms not only oneself, but also others: at home, family, at work– colleagues.
