In 2022, a child with a diagnosis of multiple arteriovenous lung malformations was admitted to the Republican Children's Clinical Hospital. Pathological vessels were scattered throughout both lungs literally everywhere.
This meant that most of the blood passed through the lungs, bypassing the capillaries, without being saturated with oxygen, and was immediately discharged back into the bloodstream. The child's saturation was steadily reduced, the heart was overloaded, and the tissues suffered from chronic hypoxia.
Without treatment, the disease would inevitably progress, leading to severe respiratory and heart failure. The prognosis was extremely serious. With the classical surgical approach, the boy would have had to lose a significant part of his lung tissue. But since the malformations were multiple and bilateral, resection was practically impossible. In fact, the patient was a candidate for lung transplantation.
However, the X—ray surgeons of the CRCH offered an alternative - endovascular embolization. This is a minimally invasive technique in which the surgeon inserts a catheter into the pulmonary artery through a puncture in the femoral artery, finds a pathological vessel and closes it using special spirals or occluders. The intervention takes place without incisions, through a point puncture.
