Svetlana Osoblivaya, the head of therapy at the Nizhnekamsk Central Regional Hospital: "Not a single person left his post - everyone devoted themselves to patients"

27 August 2020, Thursday

Svetlana Osoblivaya, the head of the Therapy Department at National Center for Children's Medicine, told us about the selfless work of colleagues who have been working with no weekends and holidays off due to the pandemic and about what the coronavirus surprised us with and what medicine taught us. Previously, the specialist was awarded the medal "For Selflessness."

About the hospital

The Therapy Department was the first to encounter COVID-19  patients - an entire floor of the current hospital was allocated for them at the end of April. Patients who lost their sense of smell and changed taste sensations were delivered with affected lungs and high fever.

"Such pneumonia did not fit into the clinic of ordinary bacterial pneumonia," said the doctor.

"Then, the doctors were learning to distinguish COVID-19 from other diseases and make a diagnosis. We contacted pulmonologists from Kazan and studied this issue. Patients with a positive test were hospitalized in the  hospital in Naberezhnye Chelny. When the number of patients began to increase, and we realized that we could not manage in the department conditions, the hospital was deployed. Our young doctors, nurses, and nurses assistants were the first to go there, not knowing anything about the new disease. "

Dr. Osoblivaya also wanted to go to the hospital. Still, she stayed with one more doctor in her department, where a large patient flow was present as well. There are no planned patients in therapy, except for those who suffer from endocrine and hematological diseases. Those who need urgent help and are in serious condition brought here.

"Why are we talking about selfless labor? Because not a single person left his post - vacations, sick leaves got canceled. Everyone worked fully devoting themselves to the patients," shared the doctor.

"Doctors of all specialties worked in the hospital, because an algorithm for treating patients was developed. Also, it was necessary to observe and watch how they received treatment. To be able to carry out differential diagnostics in the emergency room and decide who and where to send, specialists were needed. Working in the emergency room is about selflessness too. Sometimes, we received 50-60 people a day with no time to get up and have lunch. "

About colleagues

This Sunday, Dr. Osoblivaya had the only full-fledged day off in the last four months. In addition to working in her department, she is on duty in the emergency room every other 24 hour shift. It is how all doctors work during a pandemic.

"Dr. Roman Andreevich Frolov is on duty in the emergency room for three days and nights in a row. He works seven days a week from April to the present day. If one of the doctors fell ill or took a break, he always remained at the post. Dr. Frolov is a hero who is not visible on screens and banners.

Dr. Alexander Evgenievich Khrisanov is a cardiologist who also received a medal "For Selflessness." In general, cardiologists and ultrasound doctors were the first to become infected with the coronavirus infection from patients, despite wearing masks.  This situation was observed throughout Russia. Because of the fact that the disease proceeds with characteristic chest pains and these pains are very similar to heart diseases, such as myocardial infarction, patients went to cardiologists. Doctors did an ultrasound scan and an ECG and contacted patients being at risk of infection. Some of the cardiologists went to work in the hospital, while others went to self-isolation due to their age. At the same time, Dr. Khrisanov did not leave the department for almost a month. His wife brought lunches to the hospital.

Dr. Malkova Irina Stanislavovna is a general practitioner. She was the first to come to the emergency room combining work in two places as a general practitioner. Dr. Olga Mikhailovna Karamova, the Deputy Director of the Republican Medical Information and Analytical Center for Nizhnekamsk, was on duty for 24 hour shifts every other day combining them with her duties at her main job. Dr. Radik Mazgutovich Gaisin, a resuscitationist, was on duty in the emergency room, almost without leaving. Also, Dr. Alexander Dmitrievich Tartachnik is worth mentioning as well. All colleagues deserve kind words and respect.

The main thing

Dr. Osoblivaya came to medicine right after school, at the age of 18. At first, she worked in therapy as a nurse assistant, afterward, studied at the medical school, while working as a nurse. The doctor has been the department head for nine years.

"Those patients who go to the doctor late, self-medicate and think that everything will pass by itself are often seriously ill, and their recovery is difficult and takes a long time. Now, after the introduction of standards for the provision of medical care, a lot of attention is paid to instrumental examination and analyses with less communication with a patient, taking into account all the characteristics of the patient's personality and the development of the disease. As for the patient, it remains imperative to communicate to the physician. I always say that it is not the computer that diagnoses and heals the patient, but the doctor. The most experienced doctors who worked in the USSR noted that it is necessary to treat the patient, not the disease. I urge my doctors to develop intuition, learn to listen and hear the patient, develop the" third eye "to see and solve the patient's problem as well.  It is the experience that hospital work can provide.

Medicine taught me to empathize with people and provide help, regardless of my problems. You come to work, and all issues remain outside the door of the department. Here we are only interested in the patient. Each of us has an individual path to God. For me, this path leads through helping patients, through our hospital, through free medical care. There are many rescue stories; it is our usual practice. In general, miracles are always with us and happen all the time and everywhere. The main thing is to learn to see them. But if I happen to see a person off, I need to ease his suffering to leave this life with dignity, without pain and fear. "
